The fact is, declaring bankruptcy can often help re-establish credit, rather than harming it and may well be the best way out. Because of a misguided fear about bankruptcy, many people will take secured savings out to pay for an asset. It's true that bankruptcy stays on the credit for seven to 10 years, but in as little as 12 months, offers for credit often begin to arrive.
